Obama Nation

On Wednesday, Senator John McCain made a statement declaring that he would be unable to attend the first of a series of scheduled presidential debates, due to congress meeting to discuss the bailout deal. After also sighting that he would suspend all campaign activities and work with the Obama campaign to move Fridays debate to a later date. In reality, he just moved his base of operations to the Washington area. McCain stated hoped that this would allow the American people to see that he was a leader on the financial crisis of our economy, but it instead massively turned on the senator. Obama pointed out that a president should be able to deal with several things at once, and that after talking with other senators, they seemed to doubt weather they were any closer to an agreement on the deal. Now, to put things in perspective, I am a registered Democrat, and an Obama supporter. I deeply agree with Obama, presidents do have to deal with several things at once, and if McCain didn't show at this debate, I believe that would have put Obama easily over the top in the election. Obama planned to go to the debate even if McCain didn't show, to talk about his feelings, and to point out the senator's failings in not coming. With this extra exposure, Obama would be able to reach even more Americans who were on the fence. Even Mike Huckabee, who supports McCain, said that he made a huge blunder, in trying to put off the debate. Americans only saw this as the typical deal in Washington, trying to put blame off on something else, to avoid the actual matter at hand. This debate is supposed to be about America's security issues and foreign policy, which Americans usually seem to lean towards McCain due to his military background.

Then, less than 12 hours before the Mississippi debate, McCain issues a statement that he will be attending the debate. Really? It took him that long to realize that if he didn't go, it would be the biggest presidential hopeful blunder ever? Well, hopefully with this debate, Americans will see the true side of both candidates, and will make the best choice.
