Today, Governor Crist announced his new plan for restoring the Everglades. This plan allows for the state to spend 1.34 billion to buy all of U.S. Sugar's farmland, but allows the company to stay on the land, and operate indefinitely.
"The new plan was heralded by Gov. Charlie Crist and U.S. Sugar CEO Robert Buker, as a way to save jobs and restore the River of Grass by reconnecting it with it's headwaters -- Lake Okeechobee."
Does anyone else find it odd that the sugar companies CEO meets with the governor, and all the sudden, the government decides to buy all the sugar companies land, but allows them to keep their refinery and railroad? Hmmmmm. I smell something a little fishy. I understand that lots of people are concerned about the state of jobs in Florida, and this basically insures the sugar companies jobs. Also, environmentalists are concerned about preserving the everglades. And I agree entirely with these statements. But. If were in such an economic downturn, where is Florida going to get the 1.34 BILLION needed?
It's odd that we cant feed the hungry, or help the homeless, or even find enough money to get our kids a decent education, but we can pay this off. No Biggie. I'll just be paying this off the rest of my adult life.
